Alpha Sixty - Dark City Mp3

If your heyday was on the dancefloors of the Trocadero Transfer or Paradise Garage, this album ought to get our blood pumping. It's not merely a homage to disco, it IS disco - down to the production methods and way it was put together. The drums, guitars, all that - all real instrumentation, coupled with modern synthesizers for horns and strings, and older synthesizers for the more obvious electronics. I'm pretty sure I heard a Moog in there, a few places. The tracks have a nice analogue warmth - they sound like they're straight off a vinyl record or reel-to-reel tape.

Alpha Sixty has managed to create an album that could have been released in 1979 and wouldn't be even slightly out of place. That makes this album an anachronism in today's electronic music dance scene... there's a big 80s revival going on, but these guys managed to push it back to the late 70s. It's an eclectic mix of eurodisco, early styled italodisco.

The album opens with a "concept suite", which, comprise of the first 6 tracks. Melvin goes on a killing spree and eventually is driven to his demise. . My favorite track is "I Will Go On", with a hell of a vocal performance, and it's essentially a jamming eurodisco tune at 8 minutes and change in length. "Love In The Night" features the same vocalist in a slower, more relaxed groove that could be a mid-80s adult contemporary piece. Many of the other tunes are voiced by a versatile male vocalist who sounds a lot like Alec Costandinos - who gives his best performance in "I Want Sex". Overall, this is incredible work to come out of nowhere - left field. Guess there still are some disco fans out there with the means to wrangle up an album and put it out. It's obvious a lot of work went into this album.
