Horrible. Garbage. Shockingly bad. I returned it to the record shop and even the employees were mortified. Rumours abound as to the quality of the represses and let me assure you they are the worst I have ever heard. If you are a fan find the original vinyl of Treasure. For people new to the band do not support these horrible re-releases. Invest in the original pressings so you can understand the magic of this band. Truly tragic. This is my favourite album and it deserves much better. Who approves these releases? The band members must work out their differences long enough to hire someone else who can engineer all the albums from the original analogue masters. There is a market for it. Goodness gracious I would pay upwards a $1,000 for each album including artwork to be from the original analogue masters. Elizabeth Fraser, Simon Raymonde, and Robin, yes you too deserve it!

As others have said, this is the Robin Guthrie mastering, and *not* based on the "original master," as 4AD falsely claimed. If you like the muddy, squashed sound and distinct lack of detail of the Guthrie remaster, you'll like this, but if you prefer the detailed, crystalline, airy sound of the original, avoid this.

Important note: this is not a "all analog vinyl" reissue, it used digital high transferred resolution files from the analog tapes. 4ad clearly announced on their website that this pressing used <<New masters created from high definition files transferred from the original analogue tapes>> http://4ad.com/news/870 https://web.archive.org/web/20180707235610/http://4ad.com/news/870

I have listened to this last night, along with HEAD OVER HEELS, and both of them sound nice, I did not have originals to compare them with. Good pressings , dead silent, i’m happy.
Windforge
This is hands down the worst remaster yet. The dynamic range has been squashed even more than the last time (which is going some). Stick with the original which is still, by far, a better product than this.

So not true. Do not listen to this person. I have both and have done multiple comparisons with both this and Head Over Heels. Anyone declaring this one as sounding terrible is probably a flipper trying to sell their originals for inflated prices and trying to dump on the reputation of the rerelease.
Flamekiller
Terrible sound. Based on the dramatic Robin Guthrie CD remastering. Apparently the other Cocteau reissues are not much better. Shame on you 4 AD.

I believe this RE comes with download codes. Are they for HiRes/24bit wav files, or just standard 320k mp3s? Thanks.
Walan
It´s MP3 only... unfortunately no high-res download included this time.

I bought this (and the Head Over Heels) reissue tonight because my record store had these out a day early. I was waiting with baited breath for this Treasure reissue ever since it was announced. As with the other recent 4AD vinyl reissues of the Cocteau back-catalog, this sounds absolutely sublime. In fact, and maybe it's because Treasure is such an early release, the mastering job here is truly stunning and makes for what I believe is the finest Cocteau Twins reissue yet, and I'm about as big a fanboy of CT as you'll find. The stereo image is totally crisp and enveloping, and between the songs there is dead silence, as dead as it gets. Seriously, the music totally comes to life and sings out of the speakers. So rich and detailed, you hear all the melodies that are embedded deep in these songs. Physically, the record is totally flat, no warping, and the hole is precisely centered. Perfect. The jacket is matte (like the other reissues), and like those other reissues the record comes in a printed sleeve. Nothing overly 'deluxe' or anything, but still very beautiful/high quality, great resolution on the gorgeous art. This is the ultimate pressing from the ultimate album of the ultimate band. So absolutely thrilled 4AD is going through and gifting us Cocteau fans with these reissues. Don't hesitate to pull the trigger on this one. Now, please, 4AD: give us Victorialand!!!
Innadril
Victorialand would be sublime!! And I completely agree on the quality of the pressing. Besides some really strange wood chips(?) that I had to remove from the record, it plays like a dream. Very high quality reissue indeed

Looks like these are sourced from the Guthrie's. The 24/44 is a mimic of his 2003 remaster.
Ironfire
If so, can you do a review? There is a review of this on the Hoffman forum that is completely in contrast to this review :(

Thanks for the feedback/information. I saw 'Treasure' at my local store tonight while I was picking up two of the recent Felt reissues. I guess I will have to go back tomorrow and pick it up! I'll be broke (not really) but when a record is this good, there is only one thing to do.
