In the Flower’s Shade is the third release from Polish gothic metal band Artrosis. The album was actually released in Polish in 2000. This is the English language version, though one Polish version is included as an untitled bonus track.

In the Flower’s Shade is a pretty typical female-fronted gothic metal album. The music has that somber, keyboard laden vibe that characterizes the genre, though the rhythms are heavy enough that you can safely call it metal. As with most bands in this genre, the strength of Artrosis relies largely on the talents of the vocalist, in this case one Magdalena “Medeah” Stupkiewicz). Medeah has an absolutely angelic voice with real power and range, unlike a lot of her peers, who seem to have been chosen for pinup appeal rather than vocal talent.

The only real drawback of In the Flower’s Shade is the lack of originality in the songwriting. This is a pretty typical gothic metal album that follows the established formula. It would have been nice, given the talent involved, to see some more originality.

If you’re a fan of bands like Unsun, Stream of Passion, Echoes of Eternity and of course Nightwish, you’ll want to check Artrosis out. They may not be breaking any new ground, but they play this kind of music well, and Medeah’s vocals really are quite beautiful.
