WUNDERKIND
Atomic Rooster circa 1970-71 were one of the hottest and most influential heavy prog bands around, characterised by Vincent Crane's chunky robust organ work and catchy song writing that even spawned some good hit singles. Their influence can be heard in innumerable fringe Krautrock heavy bands of the early to mid 1970's, no doubt due to these Beat Club sessions. But then came along Chris Farlowe, a 60's soul/blues singer that I've never liked. He'd just ruined Colosseum (another originally excellent band) and the came along to ruin Atomic Rooster. He doesn't quite destroy two classics from the the third Atomic Rooster album "In Hearing Of" here, but I don't think I'll play them again.Verdict: a classic 32 minutes from 1970-71, including an awesome extended "I Can't Take Any More" and great quality too = well worth having!
Couldn't disagree more with the Chris Farlowe comments. I heard the Beat Club versions of Black Snake & Breakthrough before I heard the album 'In Hearing Of' and I must say that the album versions are disappointing compared to the Beat Club live versions. Not only does Farlowe's vocals give it some character, but Vincent Crane's keyboards sound a lot more dirty and 'true' rooster sound than the piano versions on the album. Would love to hear a complete live set from the Beat Club lineup.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lvhUYMTVSw
