Fast Lovebird

On her fifth album, Aziza Mustafa-Zadeh takes the Great American Songbook for a non-standard ride. One part sophisticated classical technique, one part unbelievable improvs, and a shot of Azeri folk, she gifts us an idiosyncratic, rhythmically expressive concoction, right on the rocks.

Just the last 50 seconds of Aziza's rendition of Dave' Brubecks signature 'Take Five' alone elevate this album to the status of a classic. Then with her soubrettey voice and teaseful chords, she renders the Billie Holiday classic 'Lover Man' 6.5 minutes of unadulterated lust.

One thing that troubles me: a voice with that depth, that range, along with piano comping so stylistically diverse, why the need for so many stacked vocal leads? Track 8, 'Butterflies' would have been just fine, if not remarkably more transcending, if we could hear Aziza's exalted scat the way it is, rather than guild it with cheap sound engineering tricks.

Nevertheless, how she can swing in 'Jazziza' just as effortlessly as she can twist Jazz into the intricate scales of her homeland's folkloric music as in her earlier albums is simply something to behold.
