Notes

This 13-song collection reinforces the band’s reputation for wide-ranging arrangements tightly packed into carefully structured, strongly melodic songs. While covering the same musical ground as its predecessor, the arrangements are frequently stripped back, in some places to the bone. The song titles are once again deeply idiosyncratic: ‘Dancing with My Hands in My Jeans’, ‘Interchange’ – a hypnotic track with a distinct whiff of Kraftwerk – ‘Ferris Wheel in the Night’ and Birdscarer’s first venture into Southern Gothic, ‘No Weather for Thieves’, where a towering guitar intro gives way to some back porch acoustic strumming and rolling country-rock piano. Mike Hallett’s eye for the absurdities of life is just as acute in the new material: “Knickers around your ankles / Fake-tanned fingers in the till / Got to grease the wheels of stardom / Got to pay for all those pills,” the singer observes in ‘Pause for Effect’, a lament to the endlessly destructive pull of the celebrity machine
