I keep coming back to this one. bvdub's recent work, starting with A Careful Ecstasy, has been more elaborate than a lot of his earlier stuff. I'll Only Break Your Heart, A History of Distance, and Home (under his Brock Van Wey moniker) have really grown on me!
The prolific Bvdub once again floods your ears, this time with even more shoegazing influence. I'LL ONLY BREAK YOUR HEART piles on the layers, achieving a unique thickness of sound. Even though "Embrace, Release" starts relatively spare, by the time the vocals enter, the layers have started to accrete. The lyrics have been phased until they're almost unintelligible, making them simply another texture, though the end result seems perhaps a little too gauzy, culminating in a melancholy piano line. That piano also kicks off "Feel, Unfeel," which once against blitzes the female vocals into near oblivion, before the heavily-phased drums thunder in. Later, though, some mellow breaks filter in, helping to punctuate the haze. And although Bvdub has always excelled at long, languorous tracks, there also happens to be a certain sameness to these tracks that make them indistinguishable from one another -- or from background music. The shuffling beat on "Appear, Dsiappear," could have appeared on any of the tracks to accompany the filtered vocals... again. Even the more touching moments dissipate like wisps of smoke underneath the layers. As pleasant as this album is, I think Bvdub might need a new trick up his sleeve.
One of bvdub's best! It really grew on me.
No matter how much you give, I’ll always be empty. No matter how far you travel, I’ll never be there. No matter how much you try, I’ll never notice. No matter how much you miss me, I’ll never remember you.No matter how much you live for me, I’ll never die for you.No matter how much you love me, I’ll only break your heart.- Brock Van Wey
La_Monte_Old nevermind .   La_Monte_Old: Not to "instigate" an argument, but what do you mean by "never mind?"
La_Monte_Old: Based on the way how you troll every single Bvdub release on this site, I would imagine you are 16 too. Only a high school student would go on every page and just post their drivel just to provoke a reaction.
