Notes

First 1000 copies came with the remix CD only available by mailorder.
The release includes an 8-page colour booklet featuring some of the original line-up of the group.

The first CD however was mispressed during production. An email sent out by Durtro states the following:
"Somewhere along the production line an error crept in to last month's 2CD reissues of IN MENSTRUAL NIGHT and LIVE AT BAR MALDOROR. CD1 of each title was meant to consist of remastered versions of the original two track vinyl version of the album. However, in both cases, CD1 ended up being identical to the previous Durtro CD editions of each title.
In the case of IN MENSTRUAL NIGHT, CD1 ending up consisting of the two tracks from that album as well as ‘KillyKillKilly (A Fire Sermon)’ from the NIGHTMARE CULTURE mini-album, which made up the tracks for the earlier Durtro jewel case version of IN MENSTRUAL NIGHT.
Rather than send back both titles' mis-pressed CD1s for destruction—which would both delay your order and be incredibly wasteful of 2000 CDs!—we have instead kept them in the LIVE AT BAR MALDOROR and IN MENSTRUAL NIGHT 2CD packages.
So the title that you will receive, until further notice, is this incorrect edition. We are presently pressing the CORRECT remastered two track version of CD1 of both these titles. As soon as these correct pressings are ready, they will be sent out to every mail order customer who has ordered either of these two titles from Durtro or Jnana. Thus everyone who has ordered IN MENSTRUAL NIGHT or LIVE AT BAR MALDOROR by mail order will end up receiving 3 CDs—the 2CD with incorrect CD1, and then a couple of weeks later the correct CD1 for each titles.
CD2, the Andrew Liles remix CD, is absolutely correct."

Note about the mis-pressed CD one.
The first CD was in fact remastered for this release. When we were preparing the 3 titles for reissue, I misunderstood David's desire for them to mirror the original LP issues, so when Bar Maldoror and In Menstrual Night were readied, they were prepared as the World Serpent releases with extra tracks.
The discs were remastered and manufactured. At the beginning of the manufacturing process, once I realized David's intent, we removed the extra tracks and repressed the discs. It is in fact the same mastering on both. - Mark Logan, Jnana Records

Mazuzahn
Undoubtedly the most Steven Stapleton-heavy Current 93 release, In Menstrual Night stands out among the group's earlier discography in being entirely removed from the grim, apocalyptic sound of albums like Nature Unveiled and Dogs Blood Rising. Unsurprisingly the sound more closely resembles Nurse With Wound, although more interestingly it foreshadows later C93 experimental works like Faust.

The album's inception was a chance meeting of two conceptual ideas: David Tibet imagining a place where dreams go to when they die, and Stapleton wanting to recreate the distant sounds heard echoing around a hospital at night.

The human voice is the most obvious sound featured on the album, although not in a conventional sense. Instead, countless voices - male, female, adult, child, whispered, spoken, sung - are layered atop each other. Reverb and occasional electronic sounds help provide space, and lend the first side ('Sucking Up Souls') a genuinely musical feeling despite its largely unmusical sound. This is ambient music by Eno's original definition.

The second side, entitled 'To Feed the Moon', throws in an atmospheric electronic drone and, uncharacteristically, a drum loop. Although elements of ritualistic rhythm were found sporadically on earlier Current 93 releases, the drums on this track are propulsive and hypnotic. The piece is still dreamy and atmospheric, but in a more psychedelic way.

Although contributions from Rose McDowall and HOH point towards the near-future of the band, In Menstrual Night is a Current 93 album largely unlike anything before it or since. The album is notoriously lacking in immediacy, but, given time, is the epitome of a 'grower'.

To be listened to separately, 'KillyKillKilly (A Fire Sermon)' comes from a split EP with Coil, and seemingly cannot be escaped. Although the 2008 remaster of In Menstrual Night was due to contain only the original two-track album, not only did this bonus track creep back in again, but it was also remixed on the Andrew Liles bonus disc. Not that it's a bad track by any means, simply that it does not fit in here at all (in a perfect world it would replace the version of 'Maldoror...' on Dawn). Choirs, distortion, disjointed piano chords, Steve Ignorant screaming: we are back in Dogs Blood Rising territory. A nicely structured and spacious piece, and one of the strongest efforts of the harsher end of Current 93. I just wish it could find a suitable home.
