This Finnish band started out in 2012, and has put out an EP previously. This is the first full length album by them, and it really i something special. This release holds nothing back from the very start. An uptempo riff with dissonate notes is pummeling my eardrums, joined by fast drums. As those suddenly fade away, a naked bass line lingers for a few seconds, before I am assaulted by the harrowing vocal screams by E. Keränen. It’s a pulp of screams, gut wrenching guitar and drums, before finally settling on an uptempo pace. The dissonate riffs from the guitar is provocatively standing out from the rest, but not overshadowing the vocalist’s croaks of rage which fits its raw metallic clang. The guitar work continues to stray far from what I associate with Black Metal as the song progresses, becoming increasingly more dramatic, but never disappearing into any maze that you can’t find it in. As we are nearing the end, the dumming becomes more chaotic, ending the song on a high note.
Secondly on the album, “Flesh-Earth-Soil” has a more doomy approach, with its reverberant slowed down riff section at the start. The lyrics are delivered in a static, yet just as harrowing as in the first installment, manner. As the chorus part starts, the pace is taken up a notch, and he starts to scream like a feral animal deprived of what he yearns the most for.The middle part serves as a place of contemplation, before the overture of the last bit closes the chapter with a more minor phase(which sounds fantastic in its own right).
Next comes an even more doomy track, which starts with spoken word, before being dragged into the mess of screaming, riffage and drums that generally defines this album. Out from the abyss reaches an electric guitar’s solo for a short while, before succumbing to the depths below. The vocals on this track is faster than the others, and sporadic in it’s presence. Yet, they enforce the sense of being somewhere I have never been before.
“Belief-Flame-Devour” is more straightforward, with its three part hook opening which hammers the lyrics all the way to the membrane of you motor cortex. It’s a joy to listen to all these tracks which are unique, setting their own pace and mood. There are breakdowns, pitch changes and different ideas come and go as we pass through the void.
As the album progresses, we are introduced to a lot of different ideas, but overall stay in the Black Metal range of things. The sound stays aggressive, saturated, and differs enough between the songs to make it interesting during the journey. The vocalist continues to deliver his growls in a steady, fierce way. In the second-to-last track we get another dose of slowed down riffage, which yet again proves the diversity of this release. Ultimately we get the most aggressive song on the album, which feels like a relentless barrage of Finnish native tongue filth. The combination of the riffs, screaming vocals and endless beating of the drums forges the impact firmly into my eardrums, and further into my very being.
