L’Avventura (2008) is much more than a reissue of the material. L’Avventura went out of print almost immediately, sending prices through the roof for collectors and fans alike. Happily Dean and Britta have bought the rights, now again owning their own material, and have rereleased the disc with three bonus tracks remixed by Sonic Boom [of Spectrum, and late of Spacemen 3]. The songs remixed by Sonic Boom can be found on Dean & Britta's 'Sonic Souvenirs' album as well ... but finding a copy may prove impossible, so it's delightful to get the best of both worlds here. The disc itself has been issued as a gatefold, and those of you who are lucky enough, may still find that you just might get a signed album, indicating that it is one of the first 1000 copies issued ... I’ve got mine.

This was the first album by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips, under the name Dean and Britta ... both Dean and Britta go back to their former incarnation Luna, and Dean steps back even further, as the founding member of Galaxie 500. Dean also had a side project called Cagney and Lacee, with a release entitled Six Feet Of Chain.

Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips continue to progress relentlessly with music derivative of the neo psychedelic and shoe gazer genres. I use the word derivative, because Dean has written the book, and plotted the course that anyone venturing down this avenue must surely become familiar with, as no one does it better. The music is richly textured, balanced, darkly trancelike, and floats you off on a river of moon beams with childlike sensibilities ... instantly dispensing the essence of truth and kindness. There's nothing that doesn't make sense when listening to this album ... though I warn you, when it is over, like an acid trip, you will have only a vague notion of where you have been and only the slightest memories of the visions you’ve seen ... what you will want, is to return as soon as possible, to wrap yourself in the warmth and comfort of these songs.

There's absolutely nothing to distill here, you simply get what you get, and what you get is totally addictive. The only thing better then hearing this release, is hearing it live, where you are left to wondering how such rapturing songs can be played with so little effort. L’Avventura is like sweet honey and melted butter running down your fingers as warm evening winds gently float you away ... just remember to fill your shoes with sand, something to hold you in place, otherwise you may drift too far.
