Around 1999 / 2000, most artists who had been part of the Big Beat movement started making house with a rougher edge. The most prominent example of this surely is the Chemical Brothers' "Hey Boy Hey Girl". I remember that an article in Mixmag called this new style "Smash House". When I heard that the Dirty Beatniks jumped onto that wagon too, I was sceptical at first, but this album really works. Most of the tracks are driving forward with a lot of energy, and the inclusion of Mau's beatnik poetry gives the tracks some kind of song structure, so that this records is not just a collection of tracks, but a real album.
