DJ Touche And Deadly Avenger - Ministry Presents... B-Boy 2000 Mp3

Back in the 1990s, Big Beat came in two sizes: children's and adult. 'B-Boy 2000' showcases the latter, with DJ mixes from two of the recording artists who did much to evolve the genre's sound. These mixes contain four superb examples of how the genre outgrew its cartoonish roots, with Bronx Dogs' 'Mixed Blood', the Clockwork Voodoo Freaks' mix of 'Disco Doktor', Sound 5's 'Spray + Tag', and Deadly Avenger's 'King Tito's Gloves' showing that beats could be sophisticated as well as big.

The CD also demonstrates why DJ Touché was arguably King of the (Big) Beats when it came to DJing, combining a wide knowledge of break beat music with dextrous hip-hop turntablism and a self-deprecating sense of humour. Whilst Touché's song-selection, set-ordering, scratching and mixing here are all characteristically impeccable (5/5), it's sadly too short a mix to do justice to the full extent of his musical diversity and skill as a set-builder. Touché's repertoire is better demonstrated on his three BBC Radio 'Breezeblock' mixes, especially his phenomenal 'Wall of Sound Allstars' set from 1997.

By contrast, the Deadly Avenger mix here contains mostly unremarkable tracks and DJing of the sort that can be found on any 'Dope On Plastic!' mix. It certainly doesn't do Deadly any justice as the solid party-rocking DJ that his Fabric mix CD and radio mixes bear testament to (3/5).
