Here is Edward Barton: one half of the duo Jane (Jane Lancaster, his girlfriend at the time) And Barton (obviously) and as such responsible for that most unexpected, most welcome and extremely beautiful near hit It’s A Fine Day. Remember that one? A beautiful poem set to… no music at all. Enigmatically and touchingly sung by Jane. The single went to number 5 on the indie charts in 1983. On this solo album, Manchester poet and musician Edward Barton is, quite literally, screaming “Edward Barton!” at you. Here is my spoon indeed. Its hand printed cover screams as well: something special! This is one of those records that you thought only existed in your head - as soon as the stylus hits the grooves, you know you’re in for an anti all pop music rules ride as you’ll ever be. Defying everything and everyone, Barton hums, sings, growls and screams - when he isn’t torturing his guitar throughout an album that is as individual and difficult as it is wonderful and beautiful. There are many acapella songs as, in Edwards’ words, “In a complicated world, I like uncomplicated things”. Listening to Here Is My Spoon you get the feeling Edward forces himself from his throat down yours. But what a delicious spoon it is! Not too many copies were made at the time – or in fact sold. How is this possible I wonder? With gorgeously enticing titles as Every Day I Try To Find The Man Who Killed My Brother, I Am A Mother or I’ve Got No Chicken But I’ve Got Five Wooden Chairs (actually released as a single) every home should have a copy of Here Is My Spoon. Released by Barton on his private Wooden label, this record is a much treasured artifact of originality and dare that, I’ll readily admit, might not feature on my turntable every day, but when it is the roof comes off. Dangerous yet oddly comforting music.
