LP GROUP 1850 – Polyandri
No band in the Netherlands pushed boundaries further and harder than Group 1850. For their mercurial leader, Peter Sjardin, there were no rules, no limits. Music, he believed, should be about freedom, unfettered by the constraints of fashion and commerce or time and space. It was in this spirit of subversion and spontaneity that Group 1850 recorded their third and final studio album, Polyandri, in early 1974, a wild fusion of psychedelia, jazz-rock and progressive space rock dominated by Sjardin’s home-built keyboard, The Organizer.
Released in late 1975, Polyandri was completely overlooked at the time and soon fell into obscurity. It can now be fully appreciated for the first time in this glorious reissue, mastered from the original tapes. Despite its mid-70s release date, the echoes of psychedelia are still strong on the album, integrated into an expansive space rock sound on tracks like Between Eighty And Fifty Part: 1850, Thousand Years Before and the extraordinary psychedelic rant, Pumping Up The Rubber Trees. Other highlights include the tripped-out Silver Earring (featuring Barry Hay of Golden Earring on flute) and the ethereal Patience, with its haunting multi-tracked vocals and lyrical wah-wah guitar. This first ever from-the-master-tape vinyl reissue of Polyandri comes packaged in a magnificent gatefold cover with rare pictures and liner notes by Mike Stax (Ugly Things magazine).
