Nagor
1) Concerto No 5 (side 1) forgettable particularly the unsympathetic orchestra and in congested sound.2) Sinfonia Concertante (side 2): much better, both sound and performance. The soloists are not quite as involved and involving as Oistrakh father and son, but the orchestra is wonderfully balanced and classical in sound.3) Beethoven Violin Concerto (side 3): now we are talking! Very delicate and -one feels- heartfelt performance from Stern. His playing is not as inviting as Hahn (my favorite) or as purely toned as Grumiaux, but there is a lot of insight and a lot of emotion particularly in the wonderful opening movement. The NYP sounds like the Berliner on tour and Barenboim
(continued) Barenboim is again a great accompanist. The sound quality could have been better: Stern's violin is too "big" and a touch dry compared to the orchestra.
