On his previous album Lifeboat, Jimmy Herring set off down the road committed to being a solo artist, and while he did have some sensational guests stop by to lend a hand, it seems that those collaborations reinforced the notion that he sincerely enjoys being part of a collective, perhaps the band leader, yet certainly thriving on the advantages of a core group of players as he does here on Subject To Change Without Notice, who excel at being part of a whole, tailoring ideas and concepts to Jimmy’s needs, and he in turn, embracing their skills and visions for his projects.

Again Herring sets off with a polyglot of styles and attitudes, though that being said, this is a much more subtle release with more emphasis on smoothness and less sharp notes, more concerned wth demonstrating playing that embraces a liquid fluidity. There are those who will suggest that this outing delivers a rigorous musical workout, though I don’t hear that. Perhaps what those listeners are referring to is the earthbound nature of this album, meaning that it has a sense of place, a sense of gravity, and a sense of spacial existence, nearly devoid of cosmic musical soaring. Herring finds his counterbalance and his juxtapositions in his selection of source material rather than in his musical movements, which may appear scattered while looking at the track listing for some reason, yet the numbers that he’s selected, due to his presentation, all work together wonderfully, dovetailing into each other effortlessly and almost matter of factly, with the final product feeling like it simply came pouring out of him.

Herring’s material is mostly his own this time out, though he does cover “Hope” by the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a decisive and splendid lengthy take of “Within You and Without You” by George Harrison, along with “Miss Poopie” by Jimmy McGriff. While considering these songs, it became evident that Jimmy’s success and aspirations rely heavily on a keen sense of harmony that revolves around a solid rhythm section, and when applied to his original compositions, one instantly hears the groove created by this rhythm section that allows and nurtures Herring’s guitar soloing to sound nearly divinely inspired.

Subject To Change Without Notice is a fine step forward, a more than worthy body of work to explore and lose yourself in.

His personnel choices were well considered, with several that I might not have expected: Jimmy Herring: guitars; Jeff Sipe: drums; Tyler Greenwell: drums; Matt Slocum: keyboards; Neal Fountain: bass; Etienne M'bappe: bass; Bill Evans: saxophones; Béla Fleck: banjo; Nicky Sanders: violin; John Keane: pedal steel; Carter Herring: cello; Ike Stubblefield: Hammond B-3 organ.

*** The Fun Facts: The album artwork was taken from a painting by his daughter Cameron, and his son Carter, also makes a guest appearance on this record.

Herring's primary guitar for this album was a modified American Standard Fender Stratocaster, that has been equipped with two Lollar Imperial humbuckers, with the fingerboard radius being flattened out to 20" and has Dunlop 6000 fret wire … these are the tallest and widest guitar frets manufactured today, giving Herring his instantly recognizable and distinctive sound.

Just an incredible album. Instrumental at its best. Jimmy is one of the best guitarist around, especially now with his time sharing with Widespread Panic, and his other collaborations.
This album spans Fusion, Jazz, to Blues and back.
Bela Fleck plays on one of Jimmy's original tunes.
