Meat Puppets, baby. Hardcore kids playing speedpunk covers of country songs and the Grateful Dead, long hair and all, and the hardcore crowd hated them for it. But they stuck by their punk philosophy: D.I.Y. for love of music. They best defined punk rock (for me) better than hardcore ever could: doing what they loved all by themselves against all the rules.

Fantastic albums like this one and Mirage are initially disliked in that fast-food sense of unfamiliarity; usually, it's the '80s-drum-sound production that turns most any rocker ready to hate. But if you humble yourself, give these a few plays as you ignore them, suddenly you'll find yourself paying attention to melodies... licks... chops... vocal inflections that become infectious, unintended singalongs.

Ignore the rating and do like me: find the cheapest copy you can find, throw it on as background filler and wait for that moment. You might be as surprised as I once was!
