Even though Minus 8’s second album, BEYOND BEYOND, revisits a good amount of earlier material (several tracks, including “Zero G” and the magnificent “Recently at the Opera,” from his album BEYOND; his remix of DJ Cam’s “Dieu Reconnaitra Les Siens;” and DJ Cam’s remix of his “In the Spirit of Vampiros Lesbos” which appeared on the Vampyros Lesbos tribute), there’s still plenty to keep the listener intrigued. He goes ruff and operatic again on “The Tempest,” but follows that with the nu-jazz lounge of “Surpass the Power.” It’s interesting that he’s chosen movie names for his titles, because the tracks don’t match the movie at all: “Carnival of Souls” is funky jazzstep instead of anything horrific, and “A Touch of Evil” doesn’t betray its noir roots at all. Still, a good album, which would have been much better with more new material.
