Manifold Records always had some great hard trance / early hardstyle music that really captured my ears; this is one of them! Amidst Monotone Records and Hardware Files (which all had some deep and dark hard dance) was this one from Mr. Merwald. While originally I hesitated to get it because of how the record itself looked - both mixes are nothing but aural evilness. The best one is the TB Club Mix, which adds 303 riffs more toned down than Brain (more like Unix - another alias of Franz Merwald) to the church bells and Gregorian chanting. Of course there's the typical Joker / DJ Dean / Ray Clarke / etc.. style pounding kicks that really define this era. Certainly this isn't one of my favorites (I prefer oldskool URR and Spaceflower), but The Sound Of Monks is a malevolent tune guaranteed to send shivers down your spine.

Amazing record. One of my all-time favorites. I believe it was probably written by the guys from Brain Recordings- not sure exactly who. There's no information on the label. I recall that at one time it was on the Manifold Music website when it was up, and the fax # is the same as the Monotone record label's fax number. The amazing 303 riffs just scream BRAIN, but this track is much less techno and edgy. Great use of monks' chanting into a tune and judicious use of a church bell make this a unique track.

badass tune

This is one hell of a stomper. The A1 mix is more like dark hard trance while the b side contains a huge acid lead which is so evil that I wouldn't know of something more dark at the moment. Together with the Gregorian singing this gives you shivers like if you visited the best haunted house of all theme parks worldwide.
