To a small select group of people, Roger Doyle is revered as making one of the finest electro-acoustic music albums of all time. Recorded under the guise of Operating Theatre and released on United Dairies (the home of Nurse With Wound) the album RAPID EYE MOVEMENTS is a sonic delight, a spectacular work combining the best and most revolutionary concepts of both Stockhausen and Ferrari to create an altogether more eclectic concoction. Of course, Irishman Roger Doyle hadn't just appeared with this masterwork, he already had two other albums to his credit, namely OIZZO NO and THALIA. These two CD's encompass both these albums, along with an unreleased archive recording and a brand new major work. OIZZO NO was originally a private LP release and THALIA was issued by Irish CBS, both are extremely rare collectors items.
The OIZZO NO release here, however, should really be considered as Roger Doyle's early works, documenting the years 1968 to 1975, and presents a most individual talent at work, be it the strange honky-tonk piano of Bitter-Sweet Melody that opens the album, or the esoteric orchestral suite Two Movements for Flute and Strings (the earliest composition here). But mostly, this is a collection of unusual sonic observations, mixtures of manipulated music, text, tape-loops, all sorts of strange tape editing. Most curious is Ostinato with its very long spoken loop and strangely repeated musical accompaniment. Best of all though is the closing Solar Eyes, a drifting, yet dynamic tape work that strangely reminds me of Klaus Schulze circa CYBORG! despite its lack of melodies.
