Aria
If there exists a motto summing up how Scrimshaw perceive their music and how they should present it to their audience then 'only the best will do' would probably be the most appropriate. Priding themselves on only releasing the 'pick of the pack' from a plethora of available songs, Scrimshaw, an energetic Melbourne based pop/rock three-piece whose accumulative music influences include punk, rock, pop, jazz and blues, deliver on The Amazing Adventures Of Mavis And Roy a highly tight, consistent and, at times, innovative collection of vivid, immediate pop/rock. With a live-sound freshness reminiscent of early Talking Heads material, this melodic and bustling trio of song-writers (they're all accredited songwriters) led by the dstinctive lead vocalist Jo Cook, are at once wildly vibrant and also melodic. Most memorable from this excellent debut is 'You're Probably Right' - Frente-esque joyousness and melodic ease. With a strong live circuit cult following and an all-round superb debut the future looks very bright for this 'song comes first' Melbourne band.
