Every year there are a bunch of popular artists (and Take That has-beens) who contribute their own spin on Christmas classics and sing duets with other, juxtaposing, artists to make "unique" albums and make a quick buck out of fans who know full well that come December 26th the CD/record won't be played again until almost a full year later.

Typically, I stay away from these cynical cash-grabs, but Tarja Turunen, as usual, is the exception.

With a spooky, almost Celtic feel, to the songs, in the usual operatic style, Tarja really makes this album her own instead of laboriously covering someone else's hits. Some of these songs even have familiar textures from The Life and Times of Scrooge. Play this at a family get-together and they will stop yapping and take notice. Tarja doesn't just become a background noise, her haunting voice and enchanting orchestra are the perfect storm to bring new life to old classics. This is a work of art and imagination, not a cash-grab from hard-up has-beens.

Utterly essential for Tarja fans and for people who take Christmas albums a bit more seriously than the braindead masses.
