Notes
Formed in 2003 by Travus Palmer with a rotating cast of backing musicians, Thank You Mr. Keating has been making records under the radar since its inception. Sometimes loud, sometimes soft and always strange; the music Thank You Mr. Keating makes comes from decades of listening to popular music. Travus spent the earlier years of his life memorizing hit singles from the few radio stations whose signal could be received deep in the valley of New Milford, CT.
Travus spent years reworking and relating these experiences with pop music into original songs. Over the course of several albums, Thank You Mr. Keating began to explore the types of songs that would soon become its signature: lean pop songs, trimmed of excess and self indulgence; clean, warm vocal melodies. Tricky rhythms often tie the whole experience together, and then you have a Thank You Mr. Keating song.
After carefully crafting what would be the Thank You Mr. Keating sound, Travus set out to make a "game changing" album, one that abandoned the psych-folk of a few hundred songs past and embraced a new studio work method. This method is much more scientific and utilizes years of audio training. Newly adopted is the practice of collecting much more audio data than is necessary.
Fresh from this dramatic change in operations, Travus laid down the tracks for what would become "The Baxter Special". Well into the recording process, it became clear what the album's subject matter would be: a retelling of the latter half of the 1976 Ben Murphy movie "Riding With Death", a favorite of Travus' since his teen years. With a wall of guitar sound, some keen perspective and warm, lovely backing vocals by Jess Block, Thank You Mr. Keating emerged with a defining album. Despite being the 4th Thank You Mr. Keating album released (and the 7th recorded), this album is very much a debut. It is the beginning of a new "phase" of Thank You Mr. Keating. "The Baxter Special" is a complete and realized idea.
