Trouble 2, sort of

Original Trouble singer Eric Wagner released two new studio albums in 2014: FOR THOSE WHICH ARE ASLEEP with The Skull and the self-titled Blackfinger album, each of which were debut releases. Both bands are a doomish mix of Trouble, Ozzie-era Sabbath, Pentagram, The Doors, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, but The Skull are heavier whereas Blackfinger are mellower (in a haunting way) and arguably more experimental.

Yet they’re both basically alternative Trouble bands with enough to distinguish them from Eric’s former group. For one thing, neither are as rockin’ as Trouble. That said, the opening song on FOR THOSE WHICH ARE ASLEEP, “Trapped Inside,” is definitely reminiscent of Trouble, particularly when it picks-up after the opening dirge-like part.

This particular album was created/recorded by three former Trouble members – Eric, bassist Ron Holzner and drummer Jeff "Oly" Olson – as well as Lothar Keller (Sacred Dawn) and Matt Goldsborough (Pentagram). I’m not going to compare it to the contemporaneous Wagner-less Trouble album THE DISTORTION FIELD (2013) because they’re both equally good in different ways. Like I said, Trouble is more rockin’ whereas this album is more subdued and melancholy, BLACKFINGER even more so.

The best song is easily the moving title track which is the longest cut clocking-in at over 7 minutes. Honestly, it stands with the best metal songs ever, like Trouble’s recent “Your Reflection.” Of course they’re two totally different kind of songs. “The Door” is another top track with its haunting, moody approach, as if The Doors were to put out a modern song.

FOR THOSE WHICH ARE ASLEEP is somehow refreshing. It harkens back to those previously mentioned old bands, but it also has a timeless quality. The fact that the lyrics emphasize love amidst the most common struggles of life makes the album even more refreshing. The Skull are a doom band, yes, but certainly not in the hopeless, nihilistic sense of, say, My Dying Bride.
