Interesting note: my copy of the cassette was missing the pressure pad and it played through more or less OK. Then I installed a pressure pad and played the tape. 2 songs into side A, I got the horrible screeching noise in question.

i have an unplayed cassette-also a booklet that came with it-perhaps only with a limited few-there was a small square piece of foam in cassette case-which i saved-maybe fell out of cassettei do not want to risk ever playing-hope someone buys who may have skill to play and record

Yes, all copies are defective, but it's not damage, per se, it has to do with a flaw in the binder between the magnetic surface and the backing. Even if you can play the first couple of songs, eventually the surface starts peeling away from the backing and you get this screeching noise. I suppose there could be a couple of copies that would play through, but I've never seen one. Supposedly all the masters were lost in a fire. My old college radio station had reels that someone had made early on from the cassette, but the problems were there, too.

I'm not sure if anyone can corroborate, but supposedly all copies of the cassette were damaged prior to release, and none play well. I've managed to acquire two copies, and each has the same problem playing.

I agree, there definitely needs to be a reissue of all the Propeller material. I feel like I've read that all the Propeller records master tapes were lost in a house fire. I can't find the article to back this up right now though.

I bought a copy years ago, and it has always played well on and off over the past few years. Unfortunately, the last time I tried to play it, it started having problems and I quickly took it out of the deck and shelved it. It appears that each tape has a limited number of plays perhaps???

Yes. Poor tape quality. Surface doesn't bind to the backing well, so playing tends to end up really screechy as the magnetic surface lifts away from the tape. Some copies are worse than others, naturally. I sent mine off to a professional cassette restoration guy who managed to play/digitize it while constantly lubricating the tape. Pretty good result. There really should be a Propeller collection.
